Skyline Farm Is...

Hands-On History

Sleigh bells ring and horses snort frosted breath as they lunge up snow-covered hills pulling sleighs full of families squealing in delight. Springtime erupts and team and teamster arrive to proudly show off their horsepower during our annual Plow Day. Curious children and adults alike surround and question invited craftsmen. A blacksmith, harness-maker, and food preserver show off their skills, beckoning gatherings of an era long past.

Education

175 Mabel I. Wilson School second graders converged upon the Farm to learn, laugh and enjoy the outdoors for an extraordinary field trip experience through our experimental program called “People in Your Neighborhood”. Skyline Farm presented two more museum exhibits illustrating the evolution of horse drawn transportation. A rare 1906 Black Motor Buggy on loan from Owls Head Transportation Museum showed the final link to the motorized age. Another Horse-Crazy Kid Horsemanship Clinic - reminiscent of the farm’s riding stable roots - was a hit. Three hours of everything horsey, including hoof-picking, manure scooping and of course riding, wasn’t enough. “More!” they said.

Open Space

Though last winter’s snows were sparse, cross-country ski enthusiasts enjoyed groomed trails for the first time. Summer picnics and milestone celebrations took place under the tent. Across the bridge in the woods, an Eagle-Scout-to-be made trail improvements. Deri Farm added roads through the vegetable fields resulting in improved trail access.

Skyline Farm is a community resource that partners with local organizations.

Community

More than 100 local families reaped the bounty of Deri Farm’s locally-grown vegetables. 317 Main Street’s popular Henryfest featured concerts held in the outdoor amphitheater. Royal River Conservation Trust, North Yarmouth Historical Society, Foundation 51, Gorham Historical Society, and numerous Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops enjoyed educational programs in our visitor center and museum.
